Flying and camper tour of the Northwest

Pirep for places we toured in the NW. Got back from 53 days/75 flying hour tour with our Husky & camper-our Dog & Pony show. Met some wonderful people and found new unknown to us places.

Rock Springs, WY-KRKS: FBO was nice and people friendly and helpful. Should have parked camper at airport. Flew Flaming Gorge area and aborted one beach landing when a herd (dozen) antelope ran in front on short final. I didn't see them coming out of sage until last few seconds-glad Husky has some power.

Burley, ID-KBYI: no FBO to speak of and have to order fuel by phone. Flew several strips (3 1/2 hrs) within 50 miles that were in the middle of nowhere- extreme lava fields that would be a disaster if you had to dead stick. Area is very dry this year. All in all; enjoyed the area.

Month of June in Cascade, ID-U70: could not have found a better FBO. Arnold Aviation let us R&R brakes in their shop; gave us brake pads and rivets, etc. that they had in stock and and told us to replace and no charge; use of solvent tank and more. Since we were there for a month they set up an account for us and saved $0.25/gal avgas. The Arnold's couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Fred Williams; Adventure Flying Services LLC - local backcountry instructor with his beautiful Kitfox or can use your plane gave us a Foreflight overlay that included most of ID reporting points and emergency strips- some OK to land for fun. Flew with Huskies from Root Ranch (Gust & Earl keeping us in line) and Rusty (Husky) and helped lead a new Glasair Sportsman pilot to Garden Valley.

3 days Newport, OR-KONP: beautiful area & FBO building but NO help with anything-you're on your own. Masks required-left coast thing??? Flew there to visit sister, eat seafood and do coastal touristy stuff. Appears we need to do a tour of OR & WA backcountry flying sometime.

2 days in Grangeville, ID-KGIC: not much of an FBO, courtesy car pretty tough to come by. Pretty much on your own; self serve fuel. Rancher came ito town to drink a marg with us and tell us about his strip and history of the area= great.

4 days in Coeur d'Alene, ID- KCOE: high priced self serve fuel (price changes) & FBO's are all pretty much set up for jets. You're on your own. Easy access to some great N ID flying.

7 days in Eureka, MT-88M: good small airport, self serve fuel, local pilots were friendly- able to dump used oil from our oil change. Strips are a little longer flights but worth it. Nice smaller town.

3 days in Winifred, MT-9S7: very nice grass strip with self serve fuel. Great AP mgr (Ralph Rogers) that insisted on us taking courtesy car. Had a couple of beers with him- flies a 185 and spent time giving us the history of Winifred. Wonderful little town of 200 or so with great old tavern and nice new steakhouse. This little town has it all; food, drink, lodging (with three bowling lanes) and an airport with a restroom that you have to see to believe- looks like it came from an expensive hotel. I was told the benefactor of this project wanted to build a restroom the people will fly in to pee. He succeeded.... Ralph is a new friend and we'll be seeing him in AZ next winter and/or Winifred next spring/summer.

1 night staying at Buffalo, WY- KBYG: fuel and overnight. Nice airport & town; good stop on the way home to CO, KEIK. Could have spent some time there as well but were getting "get home itis" by then. Plus, Husky was loosing speed with the 1/4" of bugs everywhere.

All great flying but have to say that taking off from Memaloose, OR- 25U on top of Hells Canyon at 6708' elev and diving down into Hells Canyon to land at Big Bar- 1DA, 1236' elev less than 10 miles away was very spectacular. We were going to visit Temperance Creek Ranch but manager said nobody was there as they flew host out when it got up to 130 degrees in the bottom of Hells Canyon. We were gone from canyon bottom by 10 AM.

Great country and hope everyone can visit and enjoy this area. But, check smoke issues.

Thanks to all who gave us great opinions/ideas for strips and camping spots.

Thanks for the report. I am really interested in landing in the bottom of Hells Canyon. when it is not so hot. It is only about 85 sm from my Idaho farm. Sounds like you had the trip of a lifetime.
