After reading Steve's post about the VM1000 and "oil bath" I thought I'd post this. This wasn't my idea, infact I don't recall where I read about it, (so sorry if it was posted on the list serv):
To change a spin-on oil filter, place a plastic bag over the filter as it is being "spun off". Have the new filter very near by, and when the old one is off, put the new one straight on.
Very little mess and certainly stops giving the firewall, surrounding wires and belly (as it runs underneath) from getting an oil bath.
Initially I used a zip lock bag, but now just use a supermarket shopping bag. Both seem to do fine.
