As the OP, I wish to report on my experience.
Thanks go to Thomas Bienz for his generous straightforward advice and to Trent Palmer and his informative video.
On my way to a Fly In this past Summer, I found myself solo, over a large lake early in the AM with good WX and excellent ambient conditions.
All boxes were checked and I thought, if not now, when? Either feed the beast or give it no additional thought.
It was a fine challenge and a great experience.
Subsequently, I move towards Kurt's risk/reward position.
Would I do it again? Perhaps. After all, it was FUN!
