Side sliding window

In the aftermath of teaching my dog to "roll over", it seemed like an opportune time to improve things by adding the Munson window, being as all that stuff was being replaced anyway.

Short answer: Just as there's no way I'm aware of to put the "new wing" on an '04 or older fuselage, the factory would not provide a way to install the Munson window on my '05 dog.

Guess you will just have to buy a new 2016 model. Plus you get the new shock-absorbing landing gear! Sort of like Apple products. No way to upgrade other than to just buy a new one.

As far as a way to keep the window closed...bent coat hangar and a bit of tape. Cost: free

THAT!!!!!

Is awesome. Making one tomorrow morning.

It beats my suggestion for welding rod, one leg of a womans panty hose, the gears of a scrapped blender and 13 friction disk washers, all assembled into a micro-clutch window operator. I'm envisioning it now. I taxi up in Dawg Row, clicking my remote to warm up my hot tub in the baggage compartment, my big screen slides out the generator fires and settles into a hum and then... VOILA!!! You hear the gears begin whirring and doin their thang as the side window slowly opens letting a cloud of air conditioned delight escape into the wild as I throttle down then my pneumatic right side door and window opener kicks in.... the the disco ball lights the dusk and Bee Gees set the tone for how the weekend's gonna roll...and then the Bass starts thumpin...

Don't need no hangar wire doo-dad. If the sliding window front track is too loose and doesn't clamp the leading edge weather strip tightly, gently squeeze the track together (use either a wide sheet metal pliers, or a couple of strips of metal (with tape to protect surface) or hardwood, one each side of the track - then squeeze together a little - test, repeat.

If too tight, insert two putty knives in track. Push screwdriver (the tool kind) in between the putty knife blades and turn to spread, gently a little at a time.

Or make the wire thingy, but my non-Munson window stays snugly closed without that.

Thomas,

I have not . . . though when I sought to do that, as my Husky was being rebuilt and the original parts were trashed anyway, the factory refused to sell us the Munson window parts or provide paperwork to facilitate approval.

Don't know that I'd recommend doing this on the dog, but here's a "window keeps opening fix" I used on an Aeronca Champ, who's sliding window operated with ease. Actually way more convenient that way but wouldn't stay closed in flight.

I slightly ramped the bottom edge of the window plexiglass at the forward edge. Then an inch or so back from that I used a round file to make a detent in the bottom edge.

Next I removed the bottom track materinal and drilled a crosswise hole to coincide with where the detent would be and installed a short metal pin in the hole.

In operation, the window slides forward and the ramped edge rides up over the metal pin. Then the window drops down as the detent reaches the pin, thus keeping the window closed. This mod requires the window have some slack to lift in its channel, and this may not be the case with the dog.

I know this is an old post but I thought I would share my "fix". I had an issue with my window opening in flight. Would vibrate back and drive me crazy. I had my prop balanced and never had a problem again.

That is sure to work in many cases . . . but in mine, I dynamically balanced my own prop so it was a smooth as can be (and wood on the Aeronca 7AC, which helps too). Still, that window would slowly come open in flight. The windows on my Husky have always been stiff.

I took a coat hangar, bent it so it had a small curved handle and two prongs facing inward like an ice tong. Wrap tape around the handle to adjust tension and load the prongs from the aft side of the finger tab to the forward side of the metal frame (aft of the triangular window). I put little color matched tape on the frame to prevent scratching. Free and easy. It has held up for about 8 years now.

The first Husky I had this problem with I fixed by using Velcro to hold it closed . I noticed that it never fully closed forward because the front vertical seal didn’t allow the widow frame to track fully into it.

On my Husky I fixed this creeping window issue by cutting one edge of the folded bulbed lip off the vertical seal ( the inside one). As I see, the seal and it’s two lips fitted into the tight channel don’t allow the sliding window to track fully forward.

Taking the seal out and laying it flat on a table allowed me to cut it like filleting a fish...after reinstallation the widow went all the way forward...it’s tight for a while until the seal relaxes.

Just curious; has anyone with the Munson window had a problem with it sliding back inflight?
Hi, Don. My 2006 A-1B came with the Munson window, and I have not had a problem with it sliding out of position in flight in the 15 years and some 1400 hours since. It stays in whatever position it is placed, partially open or closed. It is a snug fit, however, and does not slide easily, so perhaps you need to squeeze the tracks a bit. As Bumper says, when it is closed it needs to be firmly closed into the forward track. Decades ago on my previous Super Cub I had the non-structural window post removed on a field approval, and installed a Munson window for photography purposes. It would gradually open in flight all the time, so I think the solution involves the thickness of the plexi and the tightness of the tracks. Or, taking Tom D's suggestion further, you could say the hell with it and completely line the interior of your cabin with pink mink. The risk in doing that is that people might look at you funny.
Enjoy your great airplane,
Russ

We converted my A1 to the sliding window, just fabbed it up. Works like normal.

Russ,

Great to see you post! How have you been? Do you still have your Husky? Where do you base out of? My brother Kent keeps his Husky at KPOU and so does Brad.

The simplest non technical solution is to get a suction cup with the diameter approximately equal to a quarter and place it against the rear window when you have the front window in the position you want it. If you forget it and move the window it just pops off. It will store in the slot on the chart bag in the typical Husky, so it is always handy.

Kurt discovered what was causing my window to slide open. Like Bumper said above, if the felt tracks are squished over and preventing the window to FULLY close with a ‘snap’ then find where the interference is. In mine it was at the very top. Once fixed, I could slide the window far enough in that it never slides open now.

I also had those blocks on the window threaded and screwed together instead of the light glue that they come with.

Kurt,

Thank you!

P.S. I was using the suction cup the other day and noticed it is actually about the size of a fifty cent coin.

The Munson window on my Husky has cracked. I was taking my biennial so I slid the window back and yelled clear prop at the Antelope to be a good student nobody around for 2 miles. We took off and the instructor was cold I turned the heat on. The window had slid back because I hadn't pushed it tight to close it. When I pushed it to close it shattered. All that said Aviat wants $375.00 for the front slider. Any ideas where l could locate a window?
